INS announced that on February 13, 89 illegal aliens, including alleged war criminals, were repatriated to Nigeria. According to INS, 68 of these individuals were unlawfully present in the U.S. while the remaining 21 were unlawfully present in Canada. Many of the deported individuals allegedly committed various crimes in the U.S. and Canada, including narcotics possession and trafficking, fraud and robbery. Upon arrival in Lagos, the individuals were taken into custody by the Nigerian government.
INS has stated that the removal of these individuals was the result of a concerted multi-national effort with costs shared by the U.S. and Canadian governments.
