Updated Poverty Guidelines Published

On February 7, the Department of Health and Human Services published updated poverty guidelines to account for the last calendar year's increase in prices as measured by the Consumer Price Index.  The increases include a rise from $11,940 to $12,120 as the guideline for a family unit of 2.  For a family unit of 3, the guideline has changed from $15,020 to $15,260.

This information is important for those completing an affidavit of support.  If you are bringing a relative to live permanently in the United States, you must accept legal responsibility for financially supporting this family member, and become your relative's sponsor by completing and signing an affidavit of support. This legally enforceable responsibility lasts until your relative becomes a U.S. citizen or can be credited with 40 quarters of work (usually 10 years).  More information on the affidavit of support can be found at the INS web site at:
